For millions of people, working in agriculture means poverty, child labor, dangerous conditions and the constant uncertainty that comes with casual work. So the Behind the Brands Scorecard examines what companies say they are doing to ensure the rights of farm workers, improve pay and conditions, guarantee safety and end child exploitation.
3/10
PepsiCo has work to do to improve workers’ rights. It doesn’t recognize the right to a living wage, to improve it needs to establish a constructive and ongoing dialouge with the Union of Food Workers.
7/10
It’s not perfect, but Coca-Cola’s policies towards workers are quite strong. It understands the issues and is tackling them – but needs to learn more about its agricultural workers.
8/10
Unilever is a leader when it comes to workers. Unilever’s Responsible Sourcing Policy sets out new requirements for its suppliers in relation to workers’ rights. It could still improve on ensuring its suppliers implement key labour rights, though.
From Behind The Brands
More water is used for farming than for anything else. Click at one of the brands above to see how the brand scores! PepsiCo’s commitment to water issues is impressive. It respects the UN human right to water and is serious about reducing water use. However, the company should ask suppliers to reduce water use and needs to disclose more about whether and how it operates in water-stressed regions. Coca-Cola demonstrates good understanding of the importance of water and of its own impact on supplies, but it needs to disclose more about whether and how it operates in water-stressed regions. Coming in second – Unilever understands the value of water and is honest about its own usage – but plenty still to do – a good next step would be setting a target for reduction of water use right through its supply chain.
